Voice stress analysis

Voice stress analysis (VSA) refers to the use of devices that purportedly detect the existence of truth, deception, and/or stress from voice and speech. Manufacturers of VSA devices note that their low cost, short training and high accuracy render the VSA an invaluable tool for law enforcement and military personnel.
However, substantiation of VSA's utility proided by these companies has consisted of only single-case ecamples and/or anecdotes without any scientific evidence regarding their efficacy. Research regarding the accuracy and efficacy of VSA has, to date, been mixed at best.

Although some studies have shown VSA technologies to be sensitive to stress, none of the studies found these technologies to provide reliable indicators of deception or truthfulness.

  1. In mid 2009 a user forum was held by a CCMA Commissioner regarding the admissibility of Polygraphs at CCMA Cases
    This commissioner had one objective and one alone;
    To stop the use of Polygraphs as utilized today by employers.

    Only one examiner in South Africa knew about this and attended the proceeding. We obtained a copy of this presentation done to various unions and employer organizations.

    In this presentation the main onus fell on the following ridiculous argument;
    The Commissioner hearing a CCMA Case cannot allow Polygraph evidence due to the fact that he/she is not a qualified Forensic Psychophysiologist.

    This means that know expert witness may be allowed to give expert testimony because the Commissioner is not an expert in that field.

    We opposed this Forum successfully and it must be noted that in terms of rulings made at the High Court, our expert testimony at any Judicial level must be heard and only then can the Judge, Magistrate or Commissioner give a finding and reasons why the evidence cannot be admissible. Before any expert evidence can be rejected, there must be another expert that explains and gives testimony to cause such rejection.

    The entire document is available for perusal if requested.
